Crackpot

The holidays are quickly approaching and lucky for all of you, I have stumbled upon the perfect gift for any designer...or anyone that appreciates good design or just awesomeness in general.

The Crackpot 2008 Calendar
provides a new page of characters and illustrations from around the world every week, yes week, not month, so you only have to wait 7 days for the next jolt of creative inspiration. The calendar can be hung or propped on your desk and costs a mere $20. Check out the images below and I think you'll agree that this gem is worth much more than its price tag:

Owlellujah

If you know me, you know I have a thing for owls. There seems to be an owl trend lately, with the wise nocturnals popping up everywhere from jewelry to furniture to t-shirts. I stumbled upon the Owl Movement site and its a wealth of owly-goodness. Here's some of my faves, many more designs available for sale on their site.

CK Koo Namecard:
The namecard for fashion stylist CK Koo consists of a base card depicting girl in her undies with transparent cards for accessories overlaid on top. The transparencies can be slid & layered to create different ensembles–the perfect promo piece for someone whose profession is mixing, matching & layering.

Agency: DDB, Singapore
Creative Director: Terrence Tan
Designer: Teoh Sin Eng
Illustrator: kuanth.com

The Vonnegut CD:
Rethink of Vancouver created a CD case which transforms into a house. You can punch out the band's characters and play with them–sort of a modern Barbie dreamhouse.

United Visual Artists for Chemical Brothers:
United Visual Artists recently created graphics for a Chemical Brothers show in Trafalgar Square using code-based, generative 3D vector art using software they actually wrote in-house! Watch the video here

Design Meltdown

Ever have what you think is a great idea for a website, only to find out after spending 20 hours on the design that your idea doesn't work as well on screen as it does in your head? Or have a really great printed piece, but aren't quite sure how to translate it into web application?

Well, lucky for us there's an awesome site for web design inspiration that breaks sites down by color, design elements, site types, etc. so you can see how ideas similar to yours pan out on the web: Design Meltdown. This is my first inspiration stop when starting a new website project. The site has very easy navigation w/ thumbnail previews of each site example–they even have a tutorial section which walks you through creating certain effects such as drips and sprays. You have to love the "SOS" logo which subltely calls visitors out for needing their help. Screenshots below, checkout the web goodness here: http://www.designmeltdown.com

Palindrome

Not only is "palindrome" a cool word, its also an amazing design studio out of Portland, OR specializing in wedding invites and other letterpress cards. Run by Alisha Henson, Palindrome Press aims to create successful design by "slowing things down and embracing the handmade." To top it all off, the studio makes every effort to be "green" using soy based inks, chemical-free press cleaners and recycled paper.

An example of Palindrome's approach to wedding invites. Can you tell the father-of-the-bride is an art director? :)

In case anyones in the market, Alisha's offering 15% all orders placed in October.

Two Paperdolls

I've been working on a wedding invitation set for a friend, and in my search for inspiration I came across Two Paperdolls.
This site is a goldmine of type, pattern, color & format inspiration for invitations, envelopes, cards and all other collateral. They really get to know their clients and the end result is always a highly unique, totally cohesive product that's a perfect representation of their client's personality.

Images below, many more on their site (which is also well-designed and easy to navigate):

(PS-see how cool this lime green suitcase is! well for you locals in Savannah, you can have one for your very own for $8.99 at Parker's Market on Drayton...I picked up a green and purple one for my little sister, and they also have tomato red in various sizes)
